BOOSTER CLUB NEWS

Aug. 5, 2009 - NHS Booster Club begins annual membership drive

The Newton Community Schools Athletic Booster Club has begun their 2009-2010 fall membership drive, according to new booster club president Steve Schober. The Newton Athletic Booster Club’s focus is to support the young people involved in Newton middle school and high school athletics. This includes everything from football to girls and boys golf to volleyball to wrestling. The boosters also support the young people involved with cheerleading and the dance team. “We believe that involvement in these activities helps the students grow into well-rounded adults by developing attributes like teamwork and character,” Schober said. “As our mission statement indicates, our goal is to improve the qualify of the educational experience through support for the athletic activities and engagement of all our key stakeholders including the students, parents, coaches, the administration and the community.”

Last year, the community demonstrated great support for the athletics program as the booster club was able to donate $40,000 to the Newton Senior High School athletic programs. “The donation from the Newton Athletic Booster Club helps keep the quality of our programs at a high level,” Newton Athletic Director Dave Kalkhoff said. Kalkhoff said the $40,000 from this past year will be used to purchase new nets in the lower gym for the baseball, softball and golf programs as well as a new shed at the softball field. “We are looking forward to the beginning of the 2009-2010 middle school and high school athletic seasons, and we look forward to once again receiving great support for these activities from the community,” Schober said.

The fifth annual Newton Cardinal Golf Tournament kicked off this year’s membership drive this past Sunday. Other events the booster club sponsors throughout the year include the annual soap dance and serving dinner to the coaches at the annual Cardinal Relays. The booster club has memberships available at many levels starting with a $25 Contribution Booster Membership for individuals to the Ultimate Business Supporter membership of $1,000. “Last year, we introduced the concept of displaying the Business Booster names on banners at the high school sport venues for certain membership levels as well as introducing the Business Boosters at some of the events,” Schober said. “The community has really responded to this. So, we plan to continue this exciting option this year.”

In addition, other benefits are available at different levels including a limited edition hat and single and season event passes for both businesses and individuals. Kalkhoff also said season ticket forms for the upcoming football season can be turned in anytime. “If they don’t return them, they could lose their seats,” Kalkhoff said.
