Head Coach Ed Ergenbright

Cardinals Head Coach since 2004.Ed Ergenbright is the son of Arthur (Archie) and Mary Janet Ergenbright. Ed and his four sisters all grew up in Newton. He was a member of the 1980 State Championship Football team as a starting Safety. He was also a 3 time state qualifier in high school wrestling.
He attended Central College in Pella where he majored in Education and was a wrestler and baseball player. At Central he was the 1984 Baseball Team MVP, and a First Team All Iowa Conference Outfielder in 1984 & 1985. In 1985 Wrestling he placed third nationally at 134 pounds and was named an All American.
Ergenbright taught for one year at Mt. Ayr High School during the 1985-86 school year. In 1986 he moved back to his hometown of Newton and became a teacher and a varsity football assistant coach under John Jenkins coaching the defensive backs. At the end of the 2003 football season Jenkins stepped down as Head Coach and Ergenbright was handed the reigns to lead the Newton Cardinals on the gridiron. Ergenbright has also coached Wrestling and Baseball at times in Newton.
Ed is married to Collette and they have three children, Emily (18), Allison (12), and Trevor (10). Ed also enjoys bowhunting, fishing, and coaches Little League baseball.
Ed grew up around racing as his father Archie raced for over 4 decades in stock cars and sprint cars. While growing up around the old Newton Speedway as a kid Ed's nickname was "Tuff". He certainly lived up to that. Ed went on to drive a sprint car in the 360 class at Knoxville Raceway and he has one career feature win. Ed retired from racing after becoming the Newton Head Football Coach in 2004. Here are some pictures of Ed Ergenbright's #11. Notice the Red & Black paint scheme's.
